Half-timbered idyll and weather forecasting

This route is accompanied by picturesque half-timbered houses. Enjoy their lush gardens and all the details that have been attended with lots of love. In the Weather Studio you will find out why nowadays the small Oderwitz is known far beyond the borders of Upper Lusatia.
Oberoderwitz railway station: Walk down the small street "Hauptstraße" straight ahead until you reach the big street Hauptstraße (B 96). Once you have crossed the Hauptstraße, walk on it a bit to the left and then after a few meters into the small street called Am Viadukt. Cross the village stream and turn left onto the street Dorfstraße..
Follow this street up to the avenue Ahornallee. Now stay right. From the tourist information office and the Weather Studio you will be guided further by the blue mill symbol. But before you continue to explore Oderwitz, we recommend a stop at the Weather Studio. Storm, lightning and sunshine - since 2000 the measuring stations of Meteomedia AG have been delivering exact values from Oderwitz every hour. They are recorded by meteorologists and go together with numerous other data in the general weather forecast. Then in the forecast of the ARD and also the MDR millions of TV viewers find out if it will be raining or if the sun will be shining on the next day.
As a small reward for its hospitality, Oderwitz managed to get on the map of the prominent Weather Frog. In the Weather Studio you should look behind the curtain of the exciting world of weather observation. Create your own weather forecast and find out what is really behind the weather lores.

The road now leads via the streets Hintere Dorfstraße and the Langer Garten up to the Neumannmühle (Neumann`s Mill): With its huge wings the post mills not only seem to tell stories from another time, they actually do that. Thus already writings from the 12th century report on mills that are resting on a post or stand could be rotated depending on the wind direction. The Neumannmühle, however, is the youngest of the windmills still preserved in Oderwitz. Originally it had milled grain in the Bohemian Ullersdorf before it was sent on a long journey to Oderwitz in 1876 with a total of 18 horse carts. Each of its wings measures nearly nine meters and weighs over 15 centner.

Further continue on the blue mill symbol marked route to the Bertholdmühle (Berthold mill): once its mill wheels were turned by water power. In the early 30s of the 20th century, as the water flowed more and more scarcely, diesel engines started to support their drive. In the 60s, the owners of the mill switched the production to electric energy.

Stroll along the street Dorfstraße with its beautiful half-timbered houses: The originally in Upper Lusatia based Slavs used to live in blockhouses. When German settlers took up residence in medieval times, they brought the timber framing with them to the Germans who already knew this style. It saved wood, was stable and could be built several stories high. Gradually the ways of construction merged. The still preserved half-timbered houses consist of a block room on the ground floor. The first floor is often carried out in timber design. It rests on wooden beams over the block room. It`s said that the people built the half-timbered houses to dam the vibrations of the weaving loom with the house`s special statics. However, it is not authenticated.

Walking further you reach the street Am Viadukt. Here you have two options: Either you turn left, take the road An der Gärtnerei and explore the other Mühlenweg (Mill route, green mill symbol), or you turn right back on the street Hauptstraße and return to the railway station Oberoderwitz.
